What are your thoughts on what is the best GT car for under five thousand dollars?

A car were you can throw a couple bags in the back, grab the wife, and go for a drive on the weekend.

Real leather and wood, inline 6 with a manual or a V8 and it will work every damn time.

I've always been partial to the Lincoln Mk VIII. Cheaper than dirt, elegant exterior, 300-ish horses out of the box, and Mustang-easy to make faster. Did I mention cheaper than dirt?

My daily! W8 Passat wagon. All the luxuy, some of the power, and all the complexity of a true GT car.

Also, a twin air bed fits quite comfortably in the back.

Not the best picture for the sake of the question asked, but the only one I had on my phone. A 1990-91 Audi Coupe Quattro 20v. Typically are around $4,000 on audifans.com, (the place to go for one) have a sublime ride, and a gorgeous five cylinder exhaust note. They get decent gas mileage, are extremely reliable if you take care of them (they can easily be found with over 250k. The I5 just doesn't die), they're safer than almost anything else you'd look at for this price, and they're gorgeous. It gets you the attention of a super car (seriously-we're talking getting your picture taken while driving a car that costs less than an old honda) while giving the ride and comfort and the interior of a high-class GT car, because it once was. The only downsides are a) it's extremely slow, and b) parts (depending on what) can occasionally be expensive, as with any old German car. Thongs don't break often though, it's so worth it.

I forgot about these. The lovechild of a Thunderbird and Crown Vic.

While the Lexus cs is probably the most rational choice, Subaru SVX has my money. Obscure, peppy, and awesome styling featuring half-windows. Only problem is the anemic 4-speed auto. Mitsubishi 3000gts is nice too.

We have had several in the family. They're fantastic cars, as long as you keep up on the transmission and air ride maintenance. Plenty quick, they sound like they really have some fire in their belly, and the balance between great ride and decent handling is something few other cars can touch at this price point.

Under 5k? I haven't seen any lately at that sort of price.

Maybe not in your area, but a running, driving R107 or R129 can be had for around $5k in Charlotte.

Just did some looking around—sweet. They do seem to be cheaper outside my immediate area. Been admiring 450/560SLs for a while, but I hadn't seen any under 8-10k for sale locally. Thanks for the tip!
